WHAT IS A VASECTOMY?
Vasectomy is a simple, safe and effective method of permanent surgical contraception for men.
Sperms are manufactured in the testicles. The sperms from each testicle normally travel through a tube, called the vas deferens, and mix with seminal fluid, which is made by the seminal vesicles, and prostate fluid, which is made by the prostate gland. The sperm, seminal fluid and prostate fluid make up the semen. During ejaculation, the semen goes through the penis and outside the body.
A vasectomy involves removing 1.5 cm of the vas deferens on each side so that sperm can no longer get into the semen. The best technique is to leave the lower end of the VAS open to reduce back-pressure on the testes and allow the sperm to release into where they are promptly absorbed. The upper end of the VAS is carefully sutured with nylon to give permanent closure.
It is much safer and less expensive than tubal ligation for women. For this reason, increasingly married couples choose vasectomy as their permanent form of birth control.
After the procedure you will notice no change in the semen, sex drive, climax sensation, testes or scrotum and no change in erections. Recent studies have concluded that a vasectomy positively impacts on the sexual satisfaction of couples due to the loss of fear of pregnancy.
The procedure should be seen as permanent. There is a chance of reversal successfully resulting in a pregnancy in approximately 60 percent of cases. It is, however, expensive and there is no guarantee. Also, a new IVF procedure called ICSI, which involves aspiration of 1-2 sperms injected directly into the ovum (egg).
